That's so last season

Traditionally, fashion companies would design collections based on seasonal trends, equalling to about four times a year.

With the introduction of "fast" fashion, there has been higher demand for more trends, creating nameless micro-seasons. This creates a new trend "season" every week.

Fast fashion is the industry of mass production clothing sold at inexpensive prices. This process exploits the labor of workers and is attributed to fashion waste.

Where do our clothes from?

Raw materials are gathered and processed

Raw materials are spun into yarn

The yarn is woven into a textile

They are dyed and printed with hazarous chemicals

Finally, the fabrics are cut and sewn together to create a garment. Once this process is over, it is shipped to retail to be sold and worn.

China is the leader in garment production at every stage. In 2020, China was the world's largest producer of carbon dioxide (CO2).

The United States is part of garment production at the fiber production stage. This is because the USA is the 3rd largest cotton producer.

What is synthetic material?

Material is not created equally

Natural materials come from natural sources, such as plants and animals. These materials tend to be more eco friendly, however a lot of time, land, and water that go into harvesting these fibers.

Synthetic fibers are manmade and oil-based type of plastics. Though these materials do not require a lot of land or water, they emit toxic pollution during their creation process. Since they are a type of plastic, they take many years to decompose.

Over 74% of materials used in fiber production is synthetic.
